Australia 2018: Get to know Jessica Mauboy

Australia will be represented in the 63rd Eurovision Song Contest by Jessica Mauboy and the song We Got Love. Even though the country’s national broadcaster SBS had announced they would organize a national final this year, they eventually opted for an internal selection again. She will perform ninth in the second semi-final of the contest.
About Jessica
Jessica was born on August 4 1989 and is one of the few Aboriginal Australians of her country (indigenous Australians). She became known in 2006 with her participation on the fourth season of Australian Idol where she came second. In 2008, Mauboy released her debut studio album, Been Waiting with her first number-one single “Burn“. It became the second highest-selling Australian album of 2009 and was certified double platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA). Her next albums were Get’ em Girls and Beautiful. Mauboy is one of Australia’s most successful female artists. She has achieved five top-ten albums and 16 top-twenty singles.
She has many great collaborations with popular artists and has earned the 16th place of the “100 Greatest Australian Singers of All Time”. Except for being a singer, she has played in many tv shows and one of her major roles is in the television drama series The Secret Daughter for two seasons. In 2014 she was the guest pergormer of Eurovision’s interval act singing the “Sea Of Flags“. In March it was announced that she will represent Australia in Eurovision. According to her statement, her entry is talking about the restrictions of the indigenous Australians’ rights.
Australia has been participating in Eurovision since 2015. The first year it competed directly in the Grand Final as a guest with Guy Sebastian and the song Tonight. Since 2016 it has to go through the semi-final like the most of the countries. Last year it was represented by Isaiah with the song Don’t Come Easy which ended in ninth place.
Lyrics
Why do we always feel like we need to try
Why do we believe that we need to be somebody else
To feel alive
Why do we make
Why do we keep making the same mistakes
And believing that it won’t make a difference if we try
To break away
[Chorus]
I know, I know what you must be thinking
That we are powerless to change things
But don’t, don’t give up
‘Cause we got love, ’cause we got love
I won’t throw my hands up to surrender
‘Cause love is stronger than fire
So don’t, don’t give up
‘Cause we got love, ’cause we got love
[Verse 2]
Time
Don’t you think it’s just a waste of time
When we’re always fighting over material trivial things
In this life
Yeah
I don’t understand why we don’t get it right
Why do we keep going round and round
At the end of the day, we’ve only got ourselves to blame
[Chorus]
I know, I know what you must be thinking
That we are powerless to change things
But don’t, don’t give up
‘Cause we got love, ’cause we got love
I won’t throw my hands up to surrender
‘Cause love is stronger than fire
So don’t, don’t give up
‘Cause we got love, ’cause we got love
[Bridge]
(We got love)
(We got love) We got love, we got love
(We got love) We got love
[Chorus]
I know, I know what you must be thinking
That we are powerless to change things
But don’t, don’t give up
‘Cause we got love, ’cause we got love
I won’t throw my hands up to surrender
‘Cause love is stronger than fire
So don’t, don’t give up
‘Cause we got love, ’cause we got love, ’cause we got love
