Cyprus: Get to know Eleni Foureira

Afrodite’s island will be represented in 63rd Eurovision Song Contest by Eleni Foureira with the song Fuego. Even though the national broadcaster CyBc had initially decided to organise a national final for this year’s participation and assign the cοmposition of the entry to the composer Alex Papaconstantinou, their plans took a different way. Alex and CyBc ended up in Eleni as they insisted on finding a more popular and experienced artist. Her entry Fuego went public on March 2nd with the official video clip. Cyprus will compete in the second half of first semi-final.

ΕΛΕΝΗ-ΦΟΥΡΕΪΡΑ

Who’s Eleni Foureira?

Eleni was born on March 7 1987 in Albania and grew up in Greece. Her career started in 2007 as a member of the female group Mystique. In 2010 the group broke up and Eleni followed a solo career. That year, she competed in the greek national final with Manos Pirovolakis and the song “I Kivotos tou Noe” which placed second. Later she began to participate in music events such as Mad Video Music Awards  and  MadWalk. Her performances were so professional that the local media were talking about a new rising pop star. Among the songs which became hits are Chica Bomb‘s cover, Paikse Mazi Mou, Rantevou Stin Paralia, Ladies Stand Up. Furthermore she collaborated with great greek artists in music halls such as Sakis Rouvas, Natasa Theodoridou e.t.c. In 2011 she took part in the charity show Just The Two Of Us where she won the contest along with her partner. Last year she was among the five judges of the show So You Think You Can Dance. She has released four studio albums and many of her songs have been hits like Reggaeton, Ase me e.t.c.

Her ties with Eurovision are not something new as every year her name was heard to represent Greece in the competition. In 2013 she made an amazing performance in greek national final Eurosong 2013-A Mad Show performing with Ruslana the latter’s winning entry Wild Dances. In 2015 she released the song Ston Theo Me Paei which is a cover of that year’s Israeli entry Golden Boy. Her record label Panik Records submitted songs to greek national broadcaster (ERT) twice in order to represent Greece in Eurovision. Nevertheless the organizing factors had different plans for those years’ participation. This year CyBc made her the proposal to represent Cyprus and we will enjoy her performance in the first semi-final.

Cyprus has been participating in Eurovision Song Contest since 1981. This year’s entry will be the 35th  participation in the Eurovision Song Contest, which has never won until now. Three times the country has achieved a 5th placing  (1982, 1997, 2004) which were its best results. The last three years Cyprus counts successive presence in the Grand Final. Last year Cyprus was represented by Hovig with the song Gravity which finished in 21th place.

[Verse 1]
Take a dive into my eyes
Yeah the eyes of lioness
Feel the power, they ain’t lying
A little look, a little touch
You know the power of silence
Yeah keep it up, keep it up

[Pre-Chorus]
I was looking for some high-high-highs, yeah
‘Til I got a doze of you
You got me pelican fly-fly-flyin’

[Chorus]
‘Cause I’m way up and I ain’t comin’ down
Keep taking me higher
Ah yeah ah yeah ah yeah, yeah ah yeah ah yeah
‘Cause I’m burning up and I ain’t coolin’ down
Yeah I got the the fire
Ah yeah ah yeah ah yeah, yeah ah yeah ah yeah
