Czech Republic : Get to know Mikolas Josef

Czech Republic will be represented by Mikolas Josef  in the 63rd Eurovision Song Contest whο won the online national final, organized by the public Czech Television, with the song “Lie To Me“.

About Mikolas Josef 

Mikolas Josef is a songwriter, producer and music video director. In 2015 he decided to leave the modelling space to deal exclusively with his love which is music. Born in Prague on the 4th of October 1995, he comes from a musical family and has been playing guitar since he was five years old. His parents, in addition to their music skills, are both English teachers, so Mikolas is a graduate of the English School in Prague and he has also studied at the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art.

Czech public television, looking for an artist to play “My Turn” in 2017, approached Mikolas Josef, who, however, denied the proposal, saying what the song did not suit him.

The Czech national final was held online rather than television, giving the audience the chance to vote at no cost, through a special “Eurovision application”. The public vote was combined with that of the international jury and on January 29th, 22-year-old Mikolas was announced that he would fly the colors of Czechia in Lisbon among five other candidates.

The Czech Republic has participated in the Eurovision competition since 2007 and has taken part five times. The country took part until 2009 and in the coming years he abstained until he returned in 2015. The reason was due to the the poor results in the contest and that the contest was not very much well known in the Czech public. Until 2009, not only did not go to the final, but that year he did not get any points in the semifinals. In 2015 returned with Marta Jandová and Václav Noid Bárta with the song “Hope Never Dies” and despite the hopes of qualifying,  did not make it to the Grand Final again. The coveted qualification happened finally in 2016 with Gabriela Gunčíková with the song “I Stand” but unfortunately came second last in the final after receiving points only from the jury votes. Last year the flag of  Czech Republic was held by Martina Barta, with  the song “My Turn”  and again did not manage to get the ticket for the Final despite the qualification of the previous year.
