Estonia: Uku Suviste gets 2021 national selection semi finals free pass after ESC 2020 cancellation
The Eurovision Song Contest 2020 has been canceled due to the corona pandemic, which unfortunately leaves the Estonian representative Uku Suviste without the chance to perform in Rotterdam. However the Estonian act was given a free pass to the Estonian 2021 national selection semi finals.
Uku Suviste won the Esti Laul 2020 national final with the song “What Love Is” but due to the cncellation of Eurovision the musician will not be able to represent Estonia this year.
Namely Tomi Rahula, Eesti Laul producer , announced that next year they will go to the competition with a new song and Uku Suviste will also have the opportunity to participate in the competition again. However Rahula surprised Suviste during the “Ringvaade” show on ERR with the news that he would be allowed to enter the Estonian national selection semifinals directly without needing to go through the jury’s preliminary round, if he so wished.
“I believe I will definitely participate when the place already exists,” Suviste said and went on saying:
Am I unhappy? Of course I’m a little bit and of course I’m sorry, but I have to look at the seriousness of the situation.
Commenting on his staging in Rotterdam he noted:
It would have been quite an expensive undertaking, both in time and in financial terms,” Fortunately, the announcement of cancellation of Eurovision was announced early enough.
