ICELAND: Greta Salóme goes to Stockholm!
Three weeks of Söngvakeppnin have passed and Iceland has finally selected their representative for the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest! Greta Salóme is given the opportunity to represent Iceland!
Iceland’s seven-year qualifying streak may have ended last year but this year things might change. Tonight fan favourite Greta Salóme won Söngvakeppnin 2016 with her song “Hear Them Calling”. She is hoping for a better result than Maria Olafs’ disappointing 15th place in the semi-finals in Vienna.
It wasn’t easy for her to win. None of the juries ranked Greta on top and she ultimately finished a close second behind Alda Dís.
Following the first round of voting, Alda and Greta sang in the superfinal, where Greta triumphed. Tonight’s final included performance from 2 former Eurovision winners; Sandra Kim (Belgium 1986) and Loreen (Sweden 2012) along with Iceland’s previous representative in Vienna, María Ólafs.
This won’t be the first time for Greta at Eurovision. In 2012 she represented Iceland in Baku with her song “Never Forget”, performed with Jónsi. They placed 20th in the final.
