It has to be referred that the representative of Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 will be chosen through the Sanremo Festival, despite the fact that this has not been an official statement of the broadcaster. Since 2011, 6 of the 7 italian entries had participated in the Sanremo Festival. The winner of the show is asked to represent Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest and if the winner declines, the offer goes to the runner – up. This is the most typical situation of the previous years. It had to be mentioned that the artist that will be chosen to represent Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest, is not obliged to choose the same song that sang in the Sanremo Festival. However, Marco Mengoni, Il Volo and Franscesco Gabbani represented Italy at the Eurovision Song Conest with their winning song of the Sanremo Festival.
