Latvia 2019: All you need to know about Carousel and their entry “That Night”
Once again Latvia determined its Eurovision representative via the national selection format of Supernova. Supernova consisted of two semi finals and one grand final. A total of 16 acts competed in the two semi final (8 in each one) while the final had 8 acts battling for the golden ticket to Tel Aviv. Eventually the group Carousel won the national final with their entry That night.
A few words about Carousel
Carousel is an indie pop group from Riga, Latvia and was formed in 2015. It consists of the singer Sabine Zuga and the guitarist Marcis Vasilevskis. Up to 2018 they were performing songs of their favorite Latvian acts and went on after making their own music. This year they decided to compete in Latvia’s national final for Eurovision 2019, achieving to win the final. Notable that the public was in favor of Markus Riva while the winning song of Carousel topped the jury voting. The 5th placing of Markus in the jury voting gave them the victory despite coming 2nd in televoting. These days the group apart its preparation for Eurovision, is working on its debut album.
The entry “That night”
The members of Carousel are behind the song That night which is rather a vintage romantic song. The group turned to a quartet from a duet it was after the additions of Stanislav Judins at the double bass and Mareks Logins at the drums, bringing a special pulse and sound to the group’s performances.

The Eurovision Story so far
Latvia joined the Eurovision family back in 2000. The country on its debut participation, with Brainstorm finished in 3rd place with the song My Star. It didn’t take long for Latvia to win the contest, since in 2002, with Marie N’s I Wanna the Baltic country was crowned winner.
Latvia only participated in 2002 thanks to the withdrawal of Portugal from the contest, as Latvia’s poor result in 2001 had relegated them from the 2002 contest. From 2009 to 2014 Latvia met disappointing results as it failed to qualify to the Grand final. In 2015 achieved its best results the latest year with Animata and her Love Injected which ended in 6th place. In the latest edition the country was represented by Laura Rizzotto with her song Funny girl which finished 12th in the semi final failing to qualify to the final .
