Latvia: LTV reveals significant changes to national selection “Supernova 2019”

Latvia has confirmed participation in Eurovision 2019 and its national broadcaster , LTV , has announced significant changes to the national selection process of Supernova 2019.

Supernova has been the country’s formula in selecting its Eurovision representatives for already 4 years. In its 5th upcoming edition the national broadcaster has issued some major changes:

The age limit for interested performers and songwriters and acts falls as even aged 16 will be allowed to take part in the national selection. Ilze Jansone the person responsible for the competition stated on that change that this gives the opportunity to younger performers ans song writers to participate. After strong discussion on this and evaluating the for and against arguments they decided that the overall will be positive for the selection.

A second change to be introduced is the kind of song they are seeking this year. Objective of this year’s selection is to spot a “radio hit” for the next edition of Eurovision Song Contest . Therefore the evaluation of the submitted songs will be held by a jury formed by representatives of the most popular Latvian radio stations. The jury which will be evaluating the submissions will be composed for the first time of representatives of the leading Latvian radio stations.

Furthermore, the national broadcaster will implement more strict criteria during evaluating the songs.  All submitted songs must be professionally recorded and express the song writer’s philosophy. Demos of songs are likely not to be even listened.

While Latvian performers are in higher priority in the national selection, foreign producers, song writers and singers will still be able to take part in the selection. Especially for singers they must be part of a group formed of Latvian locals. All kind of acts that are interest in being the next Latvian Eurovision Representative can submit their entry from September 3 until October 21 .

Latvia in Eurovision

Latvia joined the Eurovision family back  in 2000. The country on its debut participation, with Brainstorm finished in 3rd place with the song My Star. It didn’t take long for Latvia to win the contest, since in  2002, with Marie N’s I Wanna the Baltic country was crowned winner. Latvia only participated in 2002 thanks to the withdrawal of Portugal from the contest, as Latvia’s poor result in 2001 had relegated them from the 2002 contest. From 2009 to 2014 Latvia met disappointing results as it failed to qualify to the Grand final. In 2015 achieved its best results the latest year with Animata and her Love Injected which ended in 6th place.  In the latest edition  the country was represented by Laura Rizzotto with her song Funny girl which finished 12th in the semi final failing to qualify to the final .

Lets remember the country’s best result in the latest years:
