Malta:Destiny Chukunyere wins X-factor Malta 2020 and will fly the flag in Rotterdam
After several rounds of auditions, the Bootcamp phase, the Six Chair Challenge round, followed by the Judges Houses and four Live Shows, the day for the final show of X-factor Malta arrived and saw Destiny Chukunyere win the competition and the ticket to represent the country in Eurovision 2020.
The Story so Far
The X-factor kicked off with dozens of auditions which led to the 120 acts that went on to the bootcamp phase. After the two round judgement during the bootcamp round, the qualifiers divided in 4 groups (The Girls, the Boys, the Groups and the Overs) had to go through the Chair Challenge round, where only six acts from each group were to qualify the next stage of Judges’ houses after performing on stage. Further on we saw initially the 3 Boys and 3 Girls that qualified from Judges’ Houses to the Live shows followed by the 3 Groups and 3 Overs that made it through too. The six acts of each group had to perform before their mentor and his guest , while he had to choose which three will follow him to the live shows phase.
The Live Shows’ contestants
A total of 12 acts reached the live show phase. In the past weeks the first live show , the second live show the third live show and the fourth live show were held , in which two eliminations took place in each show, leaving it with the final 4 contestants.
This year the X-factor Malta, will see a grand final with 4 original songs. The four contestants took tonight the stage and performed 4 original songs that had been composed especially for each act. The four songs were selected by the national broadcaster through an open call to national and international composers and songwriters.
Host of the show was Ben Camille, while the jury panel consisted of Howard Keith Debono, Ray Mercieca, Alexandra Alden Ira Losco.
Thus, the four acts performed firstly on stage their originals songs :
- Destiny Chukunyere – Save the Hero
- F.A.I.T.H – We Are F.A.I.T.H
- Justine Shorfid – Bittersweet
- Kyle Cutajar – Rise
Following the original songs, an additional round of performances took place as the four act got back on the stage to sing alongside with special guest. Name the duets we saw on stage were:
- Destiny & Amelia Lily – River Deep Mountain High
- F.A.I.T.H. & Owen Leuellen – Don’t Start Now
- Justine Shorfid & Louisa Johnson – Alone
- Kyle Cutajar & Michela Pace – Shallow
THE RESULTS
The show’s results unfolded over several rounds of voting , during which one act was eliminated per round. Thus the first act that was eliminated was Kyle Cutajar
The remaining 3 acts took again the stage to perform the following entries:
- F.A.I.T.H. – “Viva Malta”
- Justine Shorfid – “L-Aħħar Bidwi”
- Destiny Chukunyere – “Fejn Staħbejtli”
The contestants went through a new round of voting according to which F.A.I.T.H has to leave the show and their dream to represent the country in Rotterda.
Eventually the final show became a female’s case between Justine Shorfid and Destiny Chukunyere, which got on stage for their last performances in order to secure the votes that will lead them to Ahoy Rotterdam’s stage next May.
The public vote decided that Destiny Chukunyere should be the one to represent the country in Eurovision 2020 next May in Rotterdam. Enjoy Destiny’s winning performance:
