Russia: Get to know Yuliya Samoylova

Yuliya Olegovna Samoylova is 28-years-old singer and composer  from Russia and is the representative of Russia in Lisbon with her song i won’t break.

She was chosen internally after she was banned from the Eurovision song contest in 2017 in Kiev due to her 2015 visit to Crimea (violation of Ukrainian legislation). She studied psychology at the Modern Humanitarian Academy until 2010, when she left without having graduated.Her carrier started in her hometown Ukhta, where she was performing ar a restaurant. In 2008, she founded the group TerraNova (the band was dissolved in 2010).  Yuliya took part in the Faktor A (season 3) were she was a runner-up. She also took part in the opening ceremony of Winter Olympic games of 2014 in Sochi. As a child, Samoylova began losing function of her legs due to spinal muscular atrophy. Since then, she uses a wheelchair.

Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest

Samoylova will be Russia’s 21st participant. Russia has one victory in 2008 in Belgrade (Bima Bilan). Russia has also 7 spots in the top-3 (4 times was second and 3 times third). Since 2011, the country is always at the top-10 of the Final. In 2016, Sergey Lasarev ended up in the 3rd place of the Final with his song You are the only one despite the fact that he came first at the televoting of the Final.
