The Spanish public television broadcaster, RTVE has announced, that the castings of the new edition of Operación Triunfo 2020 will start next October in Barcelona.

For two months, the casting team of the talent show will tour the country in search of the ideal candidates to participate in the new edition of Operación Triunfo. The cities to be  visited are Barcelona, Bilbao, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Madrid, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, Santiago de Compostela, Seville and Valencia.

Thanks to the online format of OTFest, 211 artists have obtained a direct pass in the auditions, to which they advance directly without having to wait in the queue. This is especially important when looking at the figures: more than 16.000 people showed up for the auditions of OT 2018, exceeding in a magnificent way the figure of 10.000 for  OT 2017.

However, whether Operación Triunfo will be be used as the format to determine the countrys’s Eurovision entry, is still uncertain. TVE has not ruled out any other option at the moment although  sticking with Operancion Triunfo won’t be a surprise.

THE STORY OF OPERANCION TRIUNFO

Operación Triunfo was launched back in 2001 and was used than to determine the Eurovision 2002 Spanish representative. In that first season Rosa Lopez won the goldent ticket to Tallin in Estonia with her song  Europe’s living a celebration.

TVE channel used the same method to select the spanish eurovision acts and entries the following two years : Beth (2003) and Ramon (2004). In 2005 the tv programm was cut and the talent show moved to private channel Tele Cinco but without having anything to do with Eurovision. However, notable that two OT contestants from the 4th season represented the country in Eurovision, Soraya Arnelas in 2009 and Edurne in 2015.

The tv show returned back to its initial base in 2017, when TVE aired again the show after 13 years. The great success of the show led to establish it as the mechanism to determine the Eurovision 2017 representative.

The winners of ΟΤ 2017, Alfred & Amaia , represented the country at Eurovision 2018, in Lisbon with their song Tu cancion and finished 23rd in the final. This year’s the winner of OT Eurovision Gala , Miki, sang for Spain his entry “La Venda” and despite his energetic performance on Expo Tel Aviv’s stage he ended 22nd in the Grand final

Spain in Eurovision

Spain participated for the first time in  1961 with Conchita Bautista and has achieved twice to win, in 1968 (Massiel) and in 1969 (Salome). Madrid hosted the contest in 1969 where there was a four country tie in the first place on the final scoreboard.

Despite not having missed a single contest since 1961 , Spain doesn’t have remarkable results to show the latest years. Exception was Anabel Conde’s 2nd place in  Eurovision 1995 held in Dublin. Spain has came in history 2nd four times ( 1971, 1973, 1979, 1995) while it has finished last 5 times (1962, 1965, 1983, 1999, 2017) from which the first three receiving null points.  In 2014 Ruth Lorenso with Dancing in the Rain achieved a top 10 placing finishing 10th in the Grand final with 74 points.
