Sweden: SVT unveils the Melodifestivalen 2021 rules and the submission dates

The Swedish national broadcaster, SVT, is losing no time and has opened  the preparations for next year’s Melodifestivalen by releasing the rules and the dates of submission. 

A show like Melodifestivalen, that for many fans is the Minor Eurovision of the north, needs a lot of work to put in in order to become the show that will all enjoy every February and March. Therefore SVT has already kicked off the process for Sweden’s national selection by releasing the rules and the dates in accordance to which the  interested acts can submit their entries.

Acts that ambition to represent Sweden in Eurovision should send in their song at  www.melodifestivalen.se. The submission window will open on August 24 and will stay open until September 16 , 11:59 am. The rules of next yesr’s edition can be found here.

With a total of 28 participants being selected each edition, SVT plans to have at least one female writer or composer in songs with more than one composer or at least one of both, female and male writer/composer.

The Eurovision Story so far

Sweden is one of the most successful  nations in the Eurovision Song Contest, with a total of 6 victories, just one win behind Ireland. The country has the most top five results of the 21st century, with thirteen. In total, Sweden has achieved 24 top five results in the contest. After finishing second with Lill Lindfors and Svante Thuresson in 1966, Sweden went on to achieve its six victories with ABBA (1974), Herreys (1984), Carola (1991), Charlotte Nilsson(1999), Loreen (2012) and Måns Zelmerlöw (2015).

This year The Mamas won the Melodifestivalen 2020 with their entry “Move” and together the right to represent the Scandinavian country at Eurovision 2020 in Rotterdam. Unfortunately for them the contest was cancelled due to the covid-19 pandemic depirving them the chance to perform in The Netherlands. The Mamas up to date haven’t cleared if they will participate again in the next edition or not.
